Best Sunset Viewpoints Phuket: Which One to Pick

Go to Promthep Cape (แหลมพรหมเทพ) on the southern tip for the classic Phuket sunset, and arrive at least 1 hour early because traffic is bad and parking is hard to find. If the cape is packed, Windmill View Point nearby is quieter. Karon View Point costs nothing.

For one classic sunset, pick Promthep Cape; for a free stop with a pavilion, pick Karon View Point; and when the cape is crowded, move over to Windmill View Point. The west sides of Patong and Karon meet the Andaman Sea, so the sun sets over open water on that side of the island. This page covers the southern viewpoints and how to reach them; for a full day plan, use the five-day Phuket itinerary, and for swimming beaches see Phuket beaches compared.

What to see at each sunset viewpoint

Promthep Cape

Promthep Cape is the southernmost point of Phuket province, and it is a popular place to watch the sunset. Visitors staying at any beach come here in the evening. From the cape, Nai Harn Beach and Koh Man sit on the right and the small Nai Yah beach on the left, and the Kanchanapisek lighthouse stands on the headland.

A clear sky with few clouds gives the best sunset. Stay a little after the sun drops, because the glow is often more colourful than the sunset itself.

Windmill View Point

Windmill View Point (จุดชมวิวกังหันลม) sits next to Promthep Cape at the south of the island and is one of the prime sunset spots in Phuket. From there you can look back at the cape and down to Yah Nui beach. We recommend it as your first choice if you dislike crowds, because it is still unknown to many tourists.

Karon View Point

Karon View Point (จุดชมวิวเขาสามหาด) sits on a hill on the island road between Nai Harn Beach and Kata Noi Beach. It looks over three bays, Kata Noi, Kata and Karon, and Kata Beach itself splits into Kata Yai and Kata Noi.

Who it suits (and who should skip it)

  • Pick Promthep Cape for the classic, well-known sunset spot.
  • Pick Karon View Point for a free stop with a pavilion and a restroom.
  • Pick Windmill View Point if you want fewer people around you.
  • Skip Promthep Cape if you hate crowds and tight parking.
  • Skip a sunset swim at Nai Harn from May to October, when swimming is not recommended because of strong current.

How to get to the sunset viewpoints

The simplest cheap route to Promthep Cape is Smart Bus Route 1 to the Rawai terminus and then a songthaew down to the cape. Promthep Cape is about 2 km from Rawai Beach. Route 1 calls at Patong, Karon, Kata and Rawai in that order heading south, and its times are approximate and vary with traffic.

Smart Bus Route 1 Hours
Airport to Rawai, hourly 06:30–17:30
Rawai to Airport, hourly 06:00–17:00
Recommended for Promthep Cape before sunset 14:00, 15:00, 16:00

Checked November 2026.

The last bus back from Rawai leaves at 17:00, so a sunset trip by bus needs another ride home. Book a Grab or Bolt for the return, and see Grab vs Bolt in Phuket and getting around Phuket for the options.

For Patong Beach and other west-coast sunset spots, take the Phuket Town to Patong route, with recommended departures at 16:00, 16:30 and 17:00.

On a motorbike, riders and passengers must both wear a helmet; the motorbike rental guide covers licence and rental rules.

When to go

Arrive early at Promthep Cape: traffic is bad and parking is limited as sunset approaches, and the viewpoint draws visitors staying at any beach. Choose a clear day, because a sky with few clouds makes the sunset very beautiful.

If you want a swim first, check the sea before you go in. A red flag on the beach means do not swim, and Nai Harn swimming is not recommended from May to October. The Phuket weather by month guide and the rainy season guide show what to expect on the road, and the jellyfish and rip currents guide explains the flags.

Nearby and how to combine it

Nai Harn Beach is on the cape’s right-hand side and is popular for sunbathing among foreigners. If Promthep Cape is too crowded, Windmill View Point is about 5 minutes east of it. Karon View Point sits on the island road between Nai Harn and Kata Noi, so it fits on the same stretch of coast.

For something quieter on the west shore, Laem Singh Beach lies between Surin and Kamala and is a secluded beach. Read Living in Rawai, Living in Kata and Karon and Living in Patong for what each area offers, and things to do in Phuket for other days out.

Before you go

  • Arrive well before sunset: traffic and parking are the problem at Promthep Cape.
  • Bring water and a windbreaker, because the tip can be breezy even on calm days.
  • Wear a helmet on a scooter, as riders and passengers must.
  • Plan the ride home, because the last Smart Bus from Rawai leaves at 17:00.
  • Skip swimming under a red flag.
