Jellyfish and Rip Currents in Phuket: First Minute and Season
After a jellyfish sting, get the person out of the water and call 1669. Keep them still and pour vinegar over the area for at least 30 seconds. Do not rub or use fresh water. Rip currents and large waves can make swimming very dangerous in Phuket; under a 2018 tourism authority notice, a red flag means do not swim.

Two dangers share the Phuket monsoon: box jellyfish and rip currents. After a sting, remove the person from the water and call 1669. Pour vinegar over the area for at least 30 seconds.

The first minute after a sting
- Make sure you are safe from the jellyfish yourself, then remove the injured person from the water and call 1669, the national emergency hotline.
- Keep the victim as still as possible to limit the spread of venom.
- Pour vinegar over the affected area for at least 30 seconds.
- Do not rub the wound or wash it with fresh water, as this can worsen the effects.
- Take the patient to hospital at once.
Do not pour ice, water, liquor, soda or anything else on the sting. Avoid wrapping it tightly with an elastic bandage.
No vinegar to hand: rinse with sea water, never fresh water. Lift off tentacles still stuck to the skin with tweezers or thick gloves, never bare hands. If the person is unconscious, not breathing or has no pulse, start CPR at once.
Seek medical attention immediately for severe pain, confusion, chest discomfort, breathing difficulties or changes in skin colour. The Department of Disease Control hotline is 1422.
Which jellyfish and when
Most jellyfish are harmless, but some, such as the box jellyfish, can pose a serious risk. The Department of Disease Control names box jellyfish, string jellyfish and fire jellyfish as species that can kill quickly. They occur on both the Gulf and Andaman coasts in shallow water near beaches.
| Jellyfish | Season | Where seen |
|---|---|---|
| Box jellyfish | Monsoon months, when winds and currents bring them closer to shore | Shallow water near beaches on both coasts; one confirmed at the Kata dive spot in July |
| Bottle jellyfish (Physalia) | Southwest monsoon | Western beaches of Phuket; Kata in July; Nai Thon in September |
The Department of Marine and Coastal Resources calls the bottle jellyfish very venomous: burning pain and, in some people, chest tightness and difficulty breathing.

Lower the risk
- Wear protective swimwear such as rash guards, lycra suits or long sleeves.
- Avoid swimming after heavy rain, at night, or outside designated safety zones marked by buoys.
- Do not touch stranded jellyfish, which can still sting.
- Do not pick up a dead jellyfish with bare hands.
Rip currents, waves and beach flags
Large waves and rip currents can make swimming very dangerous in places like Phuket. Surin is not suitable for swimming in the monsoon season. At Nai Harn, swimming from May to October is not recommended because of strong current.

Beach flags, as set out in a 2018 tourism authority notice:
- Red: do not swim.
- Yellow: swimming is allowed, with medium risk.
- Green: calm conditions for swimming.
- Red-yellow: lifeguards are on duty.
If in doubt, ask the lifeguards or your hotel staff.
In September, Nai Thon had red flags up for strong waves and wind when a tourist was stung. The marine resources department’s advice in rough sea is to stay out of the water under a red flag and follow the lifeguards strictly. The lifeguard gave the stung tourist first aid and sent her to hospital.

Common questions
What do I do if a jellyfish stings me in Phuket?
Get out of the water and call 1669. Pour vinegar over the area for at least 30 seconds. Do not rub the wound or wash it with fresh water.
Can I use ice, soda or plain water on a sting?
No: do not pour ice, water, liquor, soda or anything else on it. Avoid wrapping it tightly with an elastic bandage.
When should I go to hospital?
Seek medical attention immediately for severe pain, confusion, chest discomfort, breathing difficulties or changes in skin colour.
What do the beach flags mean?
Under a 2018 tourism authority notice, red means do not swim. Yellow means swimming is allowed with medium risk, and green means calm conditions. A red-yellow flag means lifeguards are on duty.
When are jellyfish most common?
Box jellyfish are more commonly seen in the monsoon months, when winds and currents bring them closer to shore.
Which Phuket beaches advise against swimming in the monsoon?
Surin is not suitable for swimming in the monsoon season. At Nai Harn, swimming from May to October is not recommended because of strong current.
How can I lower the risk of a sting?
Wear protective swimwear such as rash guards, lycra suits or long sleeves. Avoid swimming after heavy rain, at night, or outside buoy-marked safety zones.
