Thailand VAT Refund for Tourists: Phuket Airport Steps
You can claim a VAT refund at Phuket airport if you are not a Thai national or resident, shop at a VAT Refund for Tourists store, spend at least 2,000 baht per store per day, and leave within 60 days. With 20,000 baht or more of goods, see Customs before check-in, then hand in the form after immigration.

The Thai VAT refund is for visitors, not residents: it is not granted if you reside in Thailand or your stay exceeds 180 days. If you are visiting, the claim happens in two places, at the shop where you buy and at Phuket airport on the day you leave, and the refund office there is open 24 hours.
Who can claim a VAT refund at Phuket airport

You qualify when four things are true: you are not a Thai national, you have no domicile in Thailand, you are not an airline crew member leaving on duty, and you leave Thailand by aeroplane. If you live here, the refund is closed to you.
Three kinds of spending do not qualify, and each one trips up visitors who assume a receipt is enough:
- Hotel and restaurant bills, because services and goods you consume during your stay are excluded.
- Purchases when you leave by car over a land border, because the refund is for air travellers only.
- A ticket for a domestic flight, which does not qualify for a claim.
So check that your ticket out of Phuket is an international flight before you plan around a refund. See Thailand visa types if you are unsure how your stay is classed.
At the shop: minimum spend and the P.P.10 form

Buy from stores that display the VAT Refund for Tourists sign. The minimum is 2,000 baht, VAT included, per day per store, so three small purchases in three shops on one day do not count, but two items in one shop on one day do.
When you pay, show your passport and ask the sales assistant for the P.P.10 form with the original tax invoices. The form must be issued on the purchase date, or the claim is rejected. Read the name and passport number before you leave the counter, because forms with a different name or passport number are very likely to be rejected.
| Threshold | What it triggers |
|---|---|
| 2,000 baht per store per day | The purchase qualifies |
| 20,000 baht or more | Customs inspects the goods before check-in |
| 40,000 baht or more per item | Luxury goods are hand-carried and shown again after immigration |
Checked November 2026.
You have 60 days from the purchase date to take the goods out of Thailand, and the purchase date counts as day one. For more places to shop and eat, see Phuket supermarkets and things to do in Phuket.
At Phuket airport: Customs, immigration, refund office

Do the airport steps on your departure date, not earlier: Customs declaration is done exactly on the departure date and should not be done in advance. If your flight leaves at 3 a.m., plan to wait for the day to change rather than going through the night before.
Customs before check-in
Under 20,000 baht per person you are exempt from Customs inspection, so you can go straight to immigration. At 20,000 baht or more per person, you show the goods, the P.P.10 form and the original tax invoice to the Customs officer at the Customs Inspection for VAT Refund counter before you check in your baggage.
Do not skip the stamp: if you forget it you cannot claim, unless Customs is waived for your total. Keep the goods out of your suitcase until the officer has seen them.
Luxury goods stay in your hand
Luxury goods are jewellery, gold ornaments, watches, glasses, pens, phones, laptops, tablets, handbags, wallets, purses and belts worth 40,000 baht or more per item. You hand-carry them and show them again at the VAT Refund for Tourists Office after immigration, where Revenue officers inspect them once more in the departure lounge.
The office after immigration
After immigration, hand in the checked P.P.10 form and the original tax invoice to the VAT refund officers. Without luxury goods to declare, you can drop them in the dropbox in front of the VAT Refund for Tourist Office instead. The Phuket airport office runs 24 hours and has the telephone number 0-7635-1948.
When you plan the ride in, see Phuket airport to Patong and Kata.
How the refund is paid

At the airport, a refund of up to 30,000 baht can be paid in cash by the refund officers, and the Revenue Department’s FAQ also names an e-wallet account (Alipay, WeChat pay). Above 30,000 baht the refund goes to a credit or debit card.
| Refund amount | How it is paid |
|---|---|
| Up to 30,000 baht | Cash from the refund officers |
| Over 30,000 baht | Credit or debit card |
Checked November 2026.
If you convert the cash afterwards, read the currency exchange guide and the ATM fees guide first.
If a downtown agent pays you before you fly
A downtown VAT refund, taken before departure, pays cash up to 12,000 baht, and the timeframe for the goods to leave is limited to 14 days. You still complete the declaration at the airport: if you skip it, the refund can be charged back and penalty fees may apply.
If you miss the airport, the documents can be mailed to the Revenue Department.
Common reasons for a rejected claim

Most rejections come from small slips at the shop or on the departure day:
- The P.P.10 form was not issued on the purchase date.
- The name or passport number differs between the form and the invoice.
- The Customs stamp is missing on a larger claim.
- The goods left Thailand after day 60, counting the purchase date as day one.
- The Customs step was done on a different day from departure.
If you are weighing a longer stay rather than a short visit, see Thailand visa exemption before you rely on a refund, because a stay over 180 days is outside it.
