Phuket Supermarkets: Imported, Wholesale and Organic Food

Your base decides it: in Kamala or Surin, shop at Villa Market in Kamala. Around Bang Tao and Layan, choose Villa Market in Cherngtalay or Pepe Gourmet, which is closed on Sunday. In Chalong and Rawai, Tops is closest, and GO Wholesale in Phuket Town runs from 6AM to 10PM.

Start from where you sleep, because your base decides which of these stores you will actually use. For imported brands, Villa Market is the one to know: it direct-imports more than 2,500 products. Its two Phuket stores sit in Kamala and Cherngtalay.

Which store for which base

Kamala, Surin and Patong. On this stretch of coast, Villa Market in Kamala is the west-coast pick. It stays open until 10PM every day, which suits a late arrival, and you get organic fruit and vegetables plus premium meat and seafood. Living in Chalong or Rawai instead, skip it, as Tops is nearer.

Bang Tao, Cherngtalay and Layan. For a full shop around here, we recommend Villa Market at Homepro in Cherngtalay, open 8AM to 9PM daily. Wine, cheese and a deli counter make Pepe Gourmet the better stop. It is closed on Sunday, though, so do not plan a Sunday dinner around it.

Chalong and Rawai. In the south, head to Tops Robinson Chalong, the store on this page for this part of the island. Its hours run from 10AM to 9PM, which rules out an early start. Shoppers chasing imported expat brands should skip it, as Villa Market is the stronger match.

Phuket Town. Early risers here have GO Wholesale, the earliest opener on this page, with doors open from 6AM to 10PM. Wheelchair users are looked after too, with an accessible entrance, car park and toilet. From the west-coast beaches, skip it, as the store is in Talat Yai.

Kata and Karon. Neither Villa Market branch is close, so for a stock-up we recommend Makro Food Service Karon, a wholesale store at 199, 1 Patak Rd. In Patong, Big C Extra sits on Ratuthit Rd.

GO Wholesale — the early wholesale shop in Phuket Town

Head here for an early start. GO Wholesale is a grocery store in Talat Yai, Phuket Town, open from 6AM to 10PM every day.

Early shoppers and big baskets suit it well. It is the earliest opener on this page, and warehouse-style shelving lines the aisles. The entrance, car park and toilet are all wheelchair accessible.

The catch is location. The store sits in Talat Yai, Phuket Town, so skip it if you stay on the west-coast beaches. For imported expat brands, Villa Market is the stronger match.

Pepe Gourmet — wine, cheese and a deli in Bang Tao

Come to Pepe Gourmet for a gourmet basket rather than a big one. It is a gourmet grocery store on Bandon-Cherngtalay Rd in Bang Tao.

Inside you find wall shelves of wine and a deli counter. The doors stay open until 10PM, which suits a late evening.

Plan around Sunday, when the store is closed. For a full weekly shop, look elsewhere, since this is a gourmet grocery store, not a supermarket.

Tops Robinson Chalong — the mall supermarket in the south

South-side shoppers have Tops Robinson Chalong for their everyday run. It works as a supermarket, convenience store and grocery store, at 88, Moo 2, Chalong.

Chalong and Rawai residents get the one store on this page in Chalong. Its hours of 10AM to 9PM suit a daytime shop.

Before 10AM, GO Wholesale is the alternative, open from 6AM. Shoppers chasing imported expat brands do better at Villa Market, the stronger match.

Villa Market, Cherngtalay — imported food near Bang Tao and Layan

Head here for imported food on the Bang Tao and Layan side. Villa Market direct-imports more than 2,500 products from around the world, and this branch on Srisoonthorn Rd in Choeng Thale is open from 8AM to 9PM.

That imported range is the draw, and you also get organic fruit and vegetables, meat and seafood. To shop from home, use the chain’s online grocery shop, which delivers.

South of Phuket Town, the picture changes. Skip this one there, as Tops in Chalong is nearer.

Villa Market, Kamala — imported food on the west coast

West-coast shoppers get their Villa Market at Kamala. The chain runs 34 stores in Thailand, including stores in Phuket, and this one at 44 Kamala Beach is open from 8AM to 10PM.

Shoppers in Kamala, Surin and Patong are its natural crowd, since it is the west-coast Villa Market on this page. Late shoppers have until closing time every day.

For Chalong or Rawai, look south instead. Tops in Chalong is nearer.

The big chains: Makro, Big C, Lotus’s and Tops

The five shops above cover imports and wholesale, but they leave gaps in Karon, Patong, Phuket Town and Thalang. Five big-chain stores fill them, and for each of them we hold an address and nothing more, so phone before a long drive.

Makro Food Service Karon is the answer for Kata and Karon. It is a wholesale store at 199, 1 Patak Rd, Karon, well placed for villa kitchens and holiday rentals that cook.

In Phuket Town, Big C Supercenter Phuket is at 72, Wichit. On the west coast, Big C Extra Phuket 2 is on Ratuthit Rd in Patong, which spares you the drive over the hill for everyday basics.

Up north, Lotus’s Thalang is at 303, Thep Krasattri, Thalang District. For the Bang Tao side, Tops Food Hall Porto de Phuket is at 116 Soi Cherngtalay, Bang Tao Beach, which suits a quick top-up better than a full shop.
