Are you leaving Thailand before your permission to stay ends? Then decide on a re-entry permit before you go. A foreigner permitted to stay temporarily who leaves without one is treated as having ended that permission.

The Immigration Act agrees: once a foreigner has temporary permission, leaving the Kingdom means that permission is treated as expired.

After having received permission for temporary entry into the Kingdom , if the alien leaves the Kingdom it is considered that his temporary entry permit has expired. Immigration Act B.E. 2522 (1979), Section 39 (English text as originally enacted)

With a permit granted before you leave, you continue to stay for the remaining period of your visa on return.

Single or multiple permit

Permit Fee
Single entry THB 1,000
Multiple entry THB 3,800

The Immigration Bureau fee schedule lists the same two amounts. The multiple permit costs THB 2,800 more than the single one, a difference you can compute from the two fees. Four single permits would total THB 4,000, which is more than one multiple permit.

So the rule of thumb: one trip out, buy the single. Two or more trips before your stay ends, buy the multiple.

The fee is not refunded if the application is not approved.

Who can apply and what to bring

You qualify when all of these hold:

  • You are not an inadmissible person under Section 12 of the Immigration Act.
  • You are permitted to stay temporarily and hold a visa stamp in a valid passport.

Bring these to the counter:

  • Form TM.8 with one 4x6 cm photo.
  • Your passport, with a copy of the page that carries the last entry permit stamp.
  • A copy of the page with the extension stamp, if you have one.
  • A letter of permission to leave the Kingdom, in case you are prohibited from leaving.

If you are prohibited from leaving, contact the relevant authorities for that letter first.

What happens at the counter

  1. Handbook step one: an officer saves your details in the Immigration Information System and checks the blacklist.
  2. An officer stamps the Re-Entry Permit in your passport.
  3. You receive your passport and a receipt.

The handbook gives a total time of 40 minutes. Service hours follow each office’s own opening times.

Getting one at the airport

You can also file at passport control (international departures) at the airport on the date of departure. Phuket International Airport is the one that matters here.

Treat the airport as the last resort, not the plan. Apply at Phuket Immigration on a working day before you fly.

When you do not need one

LTR holders are exempt from re-entry permits and the 90-day report becomes a 1-year report. Read the full LTR rules in Thailand LTR visa: categories, money tests and reporting.

For a tourist extension the fee is THB 1,900 and the extension is up to 30 days for a visa-exempt visitor. A permit does not replace that. Stay inside the limit: overstay costs THB 500 per day, capped at THB 20,000.

Entry/re-entry question Hi all I am planning a SE Asia trip early next year. Is this doable: I have a us passport, I plan on going to Bangkok for 1 week. From BKK, fly to siem reap Cambodia direct for 1 week (need to get evisa). Now, from Cambodia, can I fly BACK to Thailand? Specifically going to Phuket (there is direct from siem reap). Then spend 2 weeks in Thailand. I haven't been able to find any info about re-entry in such a short time span Thanks

Generally it's not an issue. Immigration only really tend to care if you're making a lot (10+) of short stays in a relatively short amount of time as someone with a non-regional passport or if you have a history of staying for the max amount of time allowed with a visa exemption/tourist visa then just flying out for a day and repeating the process. What you are doing is pretty common as people will fly into Thailand then explore the region and finally fly home through Thailand.
